Yes, the Canadian Dental Care Plan covers dentures, and in Calgary you can get them through the CDCP at Aviation Dental. The plan pays for complete dentures, partial dentures, repairs, relines and rebases. Some of that work needs the plan's approval first, and that is where most people get stuck. Here is how it works, in plain terms, and what we do on our end so you don't have to chase paperwork.
If you still need the basics on who qualifies for the plan and how to apply, start with our CDCP guide for Calgary. This article is just about dentures.
What CDCP denture coverage includes
The federal plan lists dentures under what it calls removable prosthodontic services. As of the current plan rules, the CDCP covers:
- Complete dentures, both standard and temporary. These replace a full arch of teeth, top or bottom.
- Partial dentures, which replace some missing teeth and clip around the ones you still have.
- Immediate complete dentures and overdentures. An immediate denture goes in the same day the last teeth come out. An overdenture sits over remaining roots or teeth.
- Repairs, relines and rebases. A reline or rebase refits a denture to your gums as your mouth changes over time.
- Tissue conditioning. A soft lining placed in a denture so sore or healing gums can settle.
Implants and implant-supported dentures are a different conversation. Those are not part of the CDCP, so if that is the route you want, we talk about Medicard payment plans instead and keep the numbers honest from the start.
Which denture work needs pre-authorization
Pre-authorization means the plan looks at the treatment plan and says yes before the work is done. If a provider skips that step on a service that needs it, the claim can be refused and the patient ends up with the bill. We don't let that happen.
Under the current rules:
- Partial dentures need pre-authorization.
- Immediate complete dentures and overdentures need pre-authorization.
- Standard complete dentures, repairs, relines, rebases and tissue conditioning are listed without a pre-authorization note on the plan's coverage page.
In practice the approval package is an exam, recent x-rays and a written treatment plan sent to Sun Life, which runs the plan's claims. We put that package together and send it. You don't have to call anyone. When the answer comes back we call you, and we only book the denture appointments once the yes is in hand.
How long does approval take? It varies, and we would rather tell you that than invent a number. What we can promise is that it won't sit on our desk.
Already have dentures? What the plan does and doesn't do
This is the question we hear most from people over 65, and the answer is better than most expect.
Already having a set doesn't automatically rule you out. Dentures you got before the plan, or paid for yourself, may not count against the CDCP's frequency limits, so you may still qualify for new dentures. We check that with Sun Life before any work starts. The plan also covers repairs, relines, rebases and adding a tooth to a denture you already own.
So the first visit is an honest look at what you have. If your current denture can be refitted or repaired and you'd be happy with that, we say so. If it is cracked, worn, or has never fit right, we build the case for a new one.
What you'll pay for dentures under the CDCP
The plan pays a share of its own fee schedule based on your adjusted family net income from your last tax return:
- Under $70,000: the plan pays 100 percent of its set fees.
- $70,000 to $79,999: the plan pays 60 percent, you pay 40.
- $80,000 to $89,999: the plan pays 40 percent, you pay 60.
Two things people miss. First, the plan pays its own fee schedule, not whatever a clinic charges, so there can be a gap even in the top tier. Second, a co-payment is paid to the clinic, not to the government. We never quote denture fees on a web page because every mouth is different, but we do go through your tier and any gap with you before a single impression is taken. You should leave the consult knowing what the plan covers.
How it works at Aviation Dental
We are at 465 Aviation Rd NE, east of Deerfoot and McKnight. Here is the path from first call to finished denture:
- Call or book online. The phone is answered around the clock, and same-day appointments are often available.
- Free consult. Before any treatment, the dentist looks at your mouth, your current dentures if you have them, and what the plan will and won't cover. There is no charge for this conversation.
- Not enrolled yet? We help you apply. Our front desk walks people through the CDCP application regularly. Bring your Social Insurance Number and last year's tax info and we'll get you started.
- We send the pre-authorization. Exam, x-rays, treatment plan, off to Sun Life. We track it.
- We bill Sun Life directly. You don't pay the full amount up front and wait for a cheque. You pay only your share, if there is one.
- Fittings and adjustments. New dentures take a few visits to get right. Sore spots in the first weeks are normal, and adjustments are part of the job.
Everything above happens in English or Spanish, whichever is easier for you.
If it's been years since you saw a dentist
A lot of the people who ask us about dentures have been putting it off. Teeth got worse, money got tight, and walking into a clinic started to feel like walking into a lecture. That is not what happens here.
Nobody at the front desk needs the story. The first visit is a look and a conversation, nothing more. If the plan covers what you need, we tell you. If part of it isn't covered, we tell you that too, and we talk about Medicard or doing the work in stages. If you can't get to us, say so when you call and we'll see what we can do.
Missing teeth change how you eat, how you talk, and whether you smile in photos. The plan exists so that fixing that isn't only for people who can pay cash. Our job is to make the paperwork disappear so you can get on with it.
Coverage details above come from the Government of Canada's CDCP pages as of October 2026. The plan's rules change from year to year, so if you are reading this later, confirm current coverage at canada.ca or just ask us.
